In I SAW NOTHING, hand-cast concrete feet stand frozen as if in midstep, while phantom-like moving images of feet appear to follow ceaselessly in their wake. The silent footsteps of the ghostly video projection paradoxically bring the concrete sculpture to life, allowing the viewer to imagine the detached feet as part of a single, whole human being in motion. The juxtaposition of ethereal moving image and still concrete feet also brings to mind the similarly mysterious and jarring juxtaposition of body and soul, or the individual and the “something more.” Human lives are by necessity singular, yet the inexplicable sensation of being “not alone” – whether it is meant spiritually or even scientifically – is a shared human experience that crosses religious, cultural and national boundaries. I SAW NOTHING attempts to evoke this shared experience through the universal language of motion, echoing rather then expressing what is beyond words.
